Two Florida teachers spotted a girl sitting by a busy road at their driveway every morning. A bench, a thank-you note and a little library followed.

When two Florida teachers saw a student sitting in the dirt at the end of their driveway, they bought her a bench. Maren Douglass, 44, and her husband, David, were in the hospital for his cancer treatment when their security camera flagged movement on Tuesday, September 1. The live feed showed a girl waiting for her school bus right beside a busy road. The school district had set her stop in front of their house, and there was no sidewalk between her and the passing cars. The same thing happened on every one of the four days they spent in the hospital that week.
So the couple ordered a bench online while they were still at the hospital and put it together themselves once they got home. They placed it where their cameras could see it, which reassured both them and the girl's family. They also chained it to a basketball pole so nobody would think it had been left out as trash. When the girl spotted it the next Monday, the camera caught her jumping for joy. "It was just the cutest reaction, just her little jumps, and it just kind of all just got sweeter from there," Douglass told People.
A thank-you note and a little library
Soon a handwritten note arrived from the girl. "Hello, this is from the kid that waits for the bus at your house," it began. "Thank you so much for putting that bench there! Now I don't have to worry about dirt and bugs, I appreciate it a ton!" The couple had also noticed that she often read a book while she waited. Douglass spent a long weekend building and painting a small library box, then set it beside the bench and filled it with books.
Other children in the neighborhood now borrow books from the box and bring them back for the next reader, so one girl's bus stop has turned into a small shared library. The girl later left flowers for the couple, and Douglass's TikTok video of the bench has passed 14 million views. Away from the camera, the couple is still working through David's cancer treatment. For Douglass, the lesson is a simple one. "The smallest thing can really make such a big difference… it really doesn't take much," she told People.
What small thing has a neighbor done that made your day better?
